Niches are specialized talent areas where an individual is directly suited. This could also be called an aptitude. These are what make each individual special in terms of unique skills. Many of us have what are called skill sets that contain a set of skills that distinguish different people from one another. For example, you may be gifted at writing, or music, home theater, recording, or even extreme sports. You may be gifted in mathematics or programming or engineering. You may be a great philosopher or thinker. You may be a great talker who can motivate and inspire people. You may be one of those who writes the next great American novel and becomes famous. You may be helping someone with your words, your poetry, your music, your technology.
We all have things that we do in our spare time that could be turned into a business or a side interest that could make money for you. We all have skills, aptitudes and talents that make us who we are. For example I am a musician and writer, who spends the bulk of his time writing music and books to entertain and inspire authors. I have taken on the dual role of being both a musician and an author. I even have in the works a book for musicians with disabilities which is a topic that I'm very passionate about.
But before we get real deep in the conversation, you must find your niche or niches. How do you find your niche? Go on the web. Surf around. Find some chores that interest you around the house. Yes, cleaning can be one of them. Find some game that you like to play often. Find a craft that you have or like to make often. Find something that inspires you so much here in your days on earth that you wouldn't be the same without. For me, if I didn't have my music or my writing to keep me in focus and always giving more of myself each day, then I would lead a pretty boring existence.
Ask yourself what you want to do, literally. Jot some ideas down on paper and make sort of a checklist and cross off the ones that, after a few minutes, a few hours or a day, you actually would not consider doing. What are your strengths? What do you really excel at? What do you get immense enjoyment and energy from?
If you like writing in blogs about yourself and all that you do, there's a possible income right there. Yes, you could have more than one thing that you're interested in at once. Having more than one niche is like having more than one job or type of income.
When you find your niche, you'll know that it is what you want to do. It's like your escape, but more than escape since you're most likely doing it most of the time. You will very seldom tire of the niche because you know a lot about this niche and what it could involve you in. If you start on a particular path and don't like it or get bored after days and days of doing it, it may not be the right niche for you. I encourage you to keep trying things and keep learning more about yourself. At first it may upset you that you find that you aren't really passionate about the things you do on a daily basis. This is okay. I've struggled with that a lot in my coming of age as an adult. But sooner or later, you will find through a method of your choosing, the path that is the most enjoyable for you. Just be patient and you'll find it. In the next few chapters, I will go over the main facets of what facilitates finding and keeping a niche.
